Buckle up for baby…
Once your bump gets large you might start to find your seatbelt awkward to position comfortably, but don’t be tempted to stop using it in the last few weeks of your pregnancy. A new study published in the
American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology indicates that if you’re in a car accident while pregnant you’re around 80% less likely to lose your baby or go into preterm labor if you buckle up.
Around 170,000 car crashes each year involve pregnant women and they cause the death of as many as 370 unborn babies. In crashes where unborn babies are injured or die, 62% of the moms-to-be aren’t wearing seat belts. The new research suggests that as many as 200 fetal deaths could be prevented if pregnant women buckle up. If you’re worried that the lap portion of the belt could injure your baby in an accident don’t be. Push it well down under your bump to ensure that if you do have an accident any impact from the belt will be absorbed by your pelvis.
