Why choose organic food for your baby?

Fruit and Vegetables that are grown in a non-organic environment (i.e. using chemical pesticides) often create a perfect looking crop, but it is not all about looks.

The reality is that from seedlings, all non-organic produce is constantly sprayed with chemicals, which are naturally absorbed into the flesh. Even though they are thoroughly washed, the chemicals are inherent within, and cannot be removed.

Recently, you may have seen newspaper reports suggesting that organic babyfood isn’t the best for babies because it contains less iron than non-organic babyfood. We’d like to clear this up! Organic regulations prohibit adding supplements to babyfoods to boost their nutrient content (such as ferrous sulphate), and Plum Baby strongly endorses this approach.

Suzannah Olivier, our nutritionist explains: “Nutrients are not designed to work in isolation. They work optimally and are best absorbed by the body when eaten in the natural foods in which they occur, and with complementary foods. For example, broccoli contains iron and the Vitamin C that is needed to help its absorption by the body. Non-organic babyfoods may add chemical sources of iron or other nutrients to their foods, but there is no guarantee that the uptake of these nutrients by the baby’s body will be any higher.”

Plum Baby recipes are designed to be naturally nutritious – both in terms of using ingredients that have been grown without pesticides and artificial fertilizers and in terms of a ‘rawcooking’ method that preserves as much of the natural goodness of the ingredients as possible.

The power of a Superfood...

We could call them ‘wonderfoods’ or ‘powerfoods’, but we liked the word ‘super’ best!

Superfoods are a way of describing nutrient rich foods. They are also known as whole foods, meaning they are used exactly as they were grown, with the goodness lying in the natural pigmentation of the flesh.

For example, take a normal potato, sweet potato, cauliflower or broccoli. Those with the most intense color hold the magic within their natural color. Fruits, for example, should be eaten with the skins on. Now obviously, we don’t mean a prickly pear, pineapple or banana, but a lot of the nutrients are held within the layer of flesh and skin – as in blueberries for example.

By using this phrase, it is intended to show how important the individual ingredients are to us, and that we take our sourcing of raw foods very seriously. We source the most nutritional ‘superfoods’ that go into every pot of Plum Baby, ensuring they are as close to ‘grown’ status as possible, with the best taste and overall quality.
